Certain groups of oppressed Muslims have become popular and acceptable among non-Muslims to express sympathy for. However, as Muslims, we must not allow ourselves to become pawns for politicians.
The Palestinian cause has become a cause celebre because it has come to symbolize for many non-Muslims a dissatisfaction with the “moral” authority of political conservatives and their evangelical base which is staunchly supportive of Zionism. It has nothing to do with supporting a Muslim claim on al-Aqsa and Palestine as a whole, or the right of return for Muslims.
The Uighur cause was also allowed to become popular by the West recently, after decades of allowing brutal Chinese policies in the region, because of the US president’s most recent campaign to put political pressure on China in order to obtain favorable concessions in trade deficit talks between the two countries.
Of course the fake plight of the Yazidis was used by US media to drum up support for cheap oil and the creation of “Kurdistan” in northeast Syria. They’re not even considered Muslim by consensus, however that didn’t stop westernized Muslims from championing their cause when it was a pretext for bombing Muslims they disagreed with.
And finally the Myanmar genocide of Rohingya Muslims is something that the international community also turned a blind-eye towards especially given that it was during the “democratic” reform of the country under the leadership of the darling of the West, Aung San Suu Kyi. Sure, they stripped her of her Nobel prize, however, is that really the same treatment that a Muslim would receive from the West if guilty of overseeing a genocide?
The above cases of oppression against Muslims are approved of by the West for various reasons- all convenient for their own economic or strategic interests. Whereas the more widespread oppression against Muslims is the West’s brutal repression of Islamic uprisings everywhere in the world and support for dictatorships and governments that continue aggression against Muslim communities attempting to establish the Shari’ah.
The West selectively allows dissent regarding certain cases of oppression against Muslims to give the impression that they care when in reality they do not. Gullible Muslims take this as a sign of “justice” and a reason to confirm their allegiance towards non-Muslims and their countries. Muslims with their eyes open must see these examples as subterfuge for the wider policy of the West involving the eradication of Islamic movements around the world.
