Shaykh Abu Najm holds a BA and MA in Islamic Studies from an Islamic University, where his master’s thesis focused on al-Awaa’il as-Sunbuliyyah.

Shaykh is the first Native American Muslim to have status as a traditional elder and as a teacher of Islamic sciences.

Numerous traditional ijāzāt (scholarly authorizations to transmit Islamic knowledge) have been granted to Shaykh Abu Najm by recognized scholars, including Shaykh Walīd bin Idrīs al-Menīsī, Shaykh Qāsim bin Ibrāhīm al-Baḥr, Shaykh Yaḥyā bin ‘Uthmān al-Mudarris [rahimahu Llahu], Shaykh Niẓām Ya‘qūbī, Shaykh Aḥmad and Shaykh Muḥammad al-Ḥibshī, Shaykh Salmān Abū Ghuddah, Shaykh Nabīl al-Ghamrī, Shaykh ‘Abd Allāh al-Burnī, and Shaykh Yūsuf al-Mar‘ashlī.

Among the Shaykh’s activities is advising Muslim communities and organizations on organizing administrative and governing structures according to the Fiqh of governance, teaching classical Arabic reading-comprehension, hadith terminology, and authoring Islamic works—including translations and commentaries on Hadith terminology, Prophetic narrations, Fiqh, and Quranic abrogation (naskh)—published under Mihbarah and other presses.
