{"id":28,"date":"2024-09-12T00:38:38","date_gmt":"2024-09-12T00:38:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hanbali.org\/?p=28"},"modified":"2026-04-10T23:39:09","modified_gmt":"2026-04-10T23:39:09","slug":"28","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hanbali.org\/?p=28","title":{"rendered":"Transmitting Books by Way of \u2018Ij\u0101zah"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"wp-block-group alignfull has-background-background-color has-background is-layout-constrained wp-container-core-group-is-layout-5f96e822 wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\" style=\"margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0;padding-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--60);padding-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30);padding-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--60);padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30)\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center has-large-font-size\">On the issue of transmitting books by way of \u2018Ij\u0101zah from a Shaykh that the Muj\u0101z [person receiving the \u2018Ij\u0101zah] has not read to nor has the Shaykh read to him: <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large extendify-image-import is-style-default\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"453\" src=\"https:\/\/hanbali.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Ijazah-pic_crop-1024x453.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-29\" style=\"aspect-ratio:16\/9;object-fit:cover\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hanbali.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Ijazah-pic_crop-1024x453.png 1024w, https:\/\/hanbali.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Ijazah-pic_crop-300x133.png 300w, https:\/\/hanbali.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Ijazah-pic_crop-768x340.png 768w, https:\/\/hanbali.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Ijazah-pic_crop-1536x680.png 1536w, https:\/\/hanbali.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Ijazah-pic_crop-2048x906.png 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Al-\u2018Im\u0101m al-H\u0101fi\u1e93 al-Mu`ammar \u2018Ab\u016b `Umar Y\u016bsuf bin `Abd Allah \u2018Ibn `Abd al-Barr [d. 463AH] may Allah have mercy on him, in his book <em>Compilation for the Clarification of Knowledge<\/em>, on authority of `Ubayd Allah bin `Umar al-`Umar\u012b, he said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I was watching az-Zuhr\u012b when a man came to him with a book that [the man] did not recite to [az-Zuhr\u012b] and [az-Zuhr\u012b] did not recite to [the man].<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">[The man] said to [az-Zuhr\u012b]:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMay I transmit it from you?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">[Az-Zuhr\u012b] said: \u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2018Ibn `Abd al-Barr commented on this and said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis is what it means- [az-Zuhr\u012b] knew the book on sight; he knew of the trustworthiness of the one who possessed it; and he knew that [what it contained] was his narrations. This is considered \u201cdirect transmission\u201d, or al-Mun\u0101walah. Also, included in its meaning is that when the \u2018Ij\u0101zah is sound it involves that.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">[See 2\/1155]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Note: Al-Mun\u0101walah, or \u201cdirect transmission\u201d, is the best and highest form of \u2018Ij\u0101zah.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the issue of the importance of the reliability of what is transmitted as opposed to actually reciting or reading to the Shaykh:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2018Ab\u016b Ya\u1e25y\u0101 Zakariyy\u0101 bin Ya\u1e25y\u0101 as-S\u0101j\u012b mentioned, on authority of \u1e24usayn al-Kar\u0101b\u012bs\u012b, he said: Upon the second arrival of ash-Sh\u0101fi`\u012b, meaning in Baghdad, I visited him and said to him:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWill you grant me permission to recite some books to you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He refused and said to me:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAz-Za`faran\u012b has copied the books. So, transcribe them- for I have granted you \u2018Ij\u0101zah for them.\u201d Thus, I took [those books] by way of \u2018Ij\u0101zah.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2018Ibn `Abd al-Barr said: \u201cThe reports about this topic are numerous saying something similar to what we mentioned. So, I think that brevity is better than lengthiness. Scholars differed regarding the \u2018Ij\u0101zah. Some people allowed it and others disliked it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat we mentioned on this topic is proof of its permissibility when the thing authorized is specific and known, preserved, verified; and the one who obtains it is knowledgeable in the pathways of this matter.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAnd if the situation is not as I described, it is not safe from him narrating that for which he has been authorized from the Shaykh adding something not from [the Shaykh\u2019s] narrations. I have seen people fall into the likes of this. I do not believe that those who disliked the practice of \u2018Ij\u0101zah disliked it except for this reason.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then, he said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIn summary of this topic, the \u2018Ij\u0101zah is not allowed except for the one who is skilled in the craft [of \u2018Ij\u0101zah], adept in it, knowing how to handle it; and [except] that it be for something specific, known, where its chain is not dubious- this is what is correct from the opinions about it. And Allah is most knowledgeable.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are some Mashayikh, starting from the time of the Salaf, who disapproved and disliked transmitting knowledge except by way of reading to a Shaykh or having him read to the Muj\u0101z.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, the majority of scholars, especially after a certain point in history, approved of granting an \u2018Ij\u0101zah based on the reliability of the specified book\/transcript and the ability of the person authorized.
