I came across this quote of ‘Ibn Taymeeyah in Majmu’ al-Fatawaa <\/em>while researching another topic. It discusses the false ‘Usuul ad-Deen as Fasaad ad-Deen, and the difference between the two.<\/p>\n That the People of Kalaam allege that the People of Hadeeth and Sunnah are People of Taqleed, not People of Investigation and Inference, and that they reject the Rational Proofs. And perhaps rejection of delving into (some matters) has been related on authority of some of the \u2018Aa\u2019immah of the Sunnah, and this is whereof they reject them. Thus it is said to them: \u2018This is not true\u2019. <\/p>\n Indeed the People of Sunnah and Hadeeth do not reject what comes in the Qur\u2019aan- this principle is agreed upon among them. And Allah has indeed commanded investigation, consideration, reflection and contemplation in other signs, and there is not recognized anyone from any of the Salaf of the \u2018Ummah, the \u2018Aa\u2019immah of the Sunnah, or the \u2018Ulamaa\u2019 rejection of that, rather all of them agree upon the command in whatever comes in the Sharee\u2019ah from investigation, reflection, consideration and contemplation, and other than that.<\/p>\n And rather (the People of Kalaam) combine the issue of \u2018Investigation and Inference\u2019 and \u2018Kalaam\u2019, thus indeed (the \u2018Aa\u2019immah of Sunnah and Hadeeth) reject what the Mutakallimuun invented from the falsehood of their investigations, their inference, and their conclusions- then they believed that this rejection entails a type of rejection of \u2018Investigation and Inference\u2019.<\/p>\n And this is exactly what a party of the People of Kalaam have designated as attached to \u2018Usuul ad-Deen\u2019, and this is grave term and what they have designated with it- in it is corruption of the Deen, and Allah is Aware of whatever is in it (of that).<\/p>\n Thus when the People of Truth and Sunnah reject that, the falsifier says: \u2018They have rejected \u2018Usuul ad-Deen!\u2019 And they have not rejected what is rightly designated \u2018Usuul ad-Deen\u2019 and indeed they have rejected what (the People of Kalaam) have designated as \u2018Usuul ad-Deen\u2019. It is a term which they and their fathers have designated for which Allah has not sent down any authority. Thus the Deen is what Allah and His Messenger have legislated, and its\u2019 principles (\u2018Usuul) and branches (Furuu\u2019) are clarified, and it is impossible that the Messenger clarified the Branches of the Deen without (clarifying) its\u2019 Roots\/Principles, just as we have declared in more than one place (in this text).<\/p>\n As such is the significance behind the words \u2018Investigation\u2019, \u2018Consideration\u2019, and \u2018Inference\u2019.<\/p>\n And generally this misguidance indeed hammers whoever does not cling to the Book and the Sunnah just as az-Zuhree would say: \u2018Our \u2018Ulamaa\u2019 were saying: \u201cClinging to the Sunnah is the Only Escape\u201d, and Maalik said: \u201cThe Sunnah is the ship of Nuuh- whoever mounts it escapes, and whoever falls from it, drowns\u201d.<\/p>\n The Sunnah, the Sharee\u2019ah, and the Minhaaj is: the straight path which the slaves take as a means towards Allah. The Messenger is: the proof, the guide, the expert in this path just as He, Exalted is He, said: {Indeed we sent you as a witness, a preacher and a warner} {And a caller to Allah by His permission and a radiant lamp}. And He, Exalted is He, said: {And indeed you are truly guiding to the straight path}{The path of Allah to Whom belongs what is in the heavens and the earth, except towards Allah are rendered the affairs}, and He, Exalted is He, said: {And that this, My path, is straight- so follow it and do not follow the (other) paths, thus separating yourselves from His path}. And \u2018Abd Allah bin Mas\u2019uud said: \u2018The Messenger of Allah, greetings and blessings upon him, drew a line, then drew other lines upon its\u2019 left and right, then he said: \u201cThis (primary line) is the path of Allah, and these (adjoining lines) are paths and upon each path (leading off the primary path) is a Shaytaan calling to it\u201d. Then he recited: {And that this, My path, is straight, so follow it and do not follow the (other) paths thus separating yourselves from His path}.<\/p>\n And when the thinker- who looks forward to meeting Allah- scrutinizes this example and scrutinizes the rest of the parties from the Khawaarij, then the Mu\u2019tazilah, then the Jahmeeyah and Raafidhah, and whoever is closer than them to the Sunnah from the People of Kalaam like the Karraameeyah, Kullaabeeyah, \u2018Ash\u2019areeyah and other than them, that for each of them is a path leaving that which the Companions and People of Hadeeth are upon, while claiming that his path is the correct one- you find that they are the ones intended by this example which the one without sin or error, who does not speak from desires, struck. Indeed it is but an inspiration revealed.<\/p>\n And the response is that from those who explain with that which his intellect (surmises) when he examines the Hadeeth- especially in the reports on the Attributes- conveying the Hadeeth upon his intellect and he permits his presentation of the Hadeeth and makes his intellect as a balance for the Hadeeth- if I only knew if his thinking in this was that which is permitted in his presentation in the Sharee\u2019ah of Muhammad, thus it would be from the path which is commanded with obedience or whether it is an innovating, ignorant, misguided mind, confused, exiting from the path?
