The \u2018Ij\u0101zah differs from al-Mun\u0101walah in that the latter requires a verbal connection between the one granting \u2018Ij\u0101zah and the one receiving it as well as requiring his presence while the \u2018Ij\u0101zah does not require this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:20px\">And \u2018Ibn a\u1e63-\u1e62al\u0101\u1e25 inclined towards considering al-Mun\u0101walah as a specific route from among those by which Hadith are conveyed and received, not a type of \u2018Ij\u0101zah.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:20px\">\u2018Ibn a\u1e63-\u1e62al\u0101\u1e25 held that a Shaykh presenting a written record of his transmissions to a student [al-Mun\u0101walah] has two types:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:20px\">1) Al-Mun\u0101walah combined with an \u2018Ij\u0101zah<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:20px\">Among its examples is when a Shaykh presents to a student the source text of the traditions he has heard; or an original copy equivalent to [the source text]- and the Shaykh says: \u201cThis is what I\u2019ve heard\u201d or \u201cThis is my transmission from so-and-so, transmit it from me\u201d or \u201cI grant you authorization to transmit it from me\u201d. Then, the Shaykh grants him ownership of [the source text or copy]. Also, he can say: \u201cTake it, transcribe it and make it an exact one; then, give it back to me\u201d or something similar to that. Another example is that a student goes to a Shaykh with a book, or a portion of the Shaykh\u2019s narrations; and the student shows the book to him. Then, the Shaykh, who is knowledgeable and cautious, carefully examines the book and returns it to the student and says: \u201cI recognize what is in it and they are my narrations from so-and-so\u201d or \u201c\u2026my transmission from my Shaykh is in it. So, transmit it from me\u201d or \u201cI grant you authorization to transmit it from me\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:20px\">2) Al-Mun\u0101walah without an \u2018Ij\u0101zah<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:20px\">This type of authorization takes place when the Shaykh hands over a book to his student and says: \u201cThis is from my narrations\u201d or \u201c\u2026from what I\u2019ve heard\u201d; and the Shaykh does not say: \u201cTransmit it from me\u201d nor \u201cI grant you authorization to transmit it from me\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:20px\">Translated from the book The Knowledge-Based \u2018Ij\u0101zah Among Muslims by Abd Allah al-Fayy\u0101\u1e0d, page 34<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Of the two types of a Shaykh presenting his transmissions to a student [al-Mun\u0101walah], the one combined with \u2018Ij\u0101zah [authorization] is the highest form of \u2018Ij\u0101zah without exception.
