Something about ijma‘

Q Assalam alaikum

I believe that there is a difference in opinion amongst the madhabs as to the definition of Ijma. Some refer to the Ijma of the Companions. Others refer to the Ijma of the Mujtahids. If there isn’t agreement as to what Ijma is, how can we say that Ijma forms a component of the Shariah?

A wa ‘alaykum al-salam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu

It is a source because there it is binding and that it occurred. The differences concern whether it stopped occurring after a certain period of time and whether consensus after a certain period ceases being binding after a certain period of time.

The disagreement pivots around its details, not its essence.

And Allah knows best.

wa-s-salam,
