Q Are there any books on the hanbali mazhab in english?
Q I was wondering if you could recommend a hanabali fiqh manual, i.e. how to do the salaat etc according to the hanbali madhab written in English.
A I added a page for this topic on the Hanbali wiki, but it’s still completely bare. If you have anything, please share it here and I’ll add it to the wiki.

As-salamu ‘alaikum,
Shaikh Salih Al Fawzan’s “al-Mulakhkhas al-Fiqhi” which is his explanation of “al-Rawd al-Murbi’” has been translated into English as “A Summary of Islamic Jurisprudence” in two volumes:

Wa 3alaykum salâm wa ra7matulLâhi.
There is no risk in this book ? I mean, as Shaykh Fawzan is known as a wahhabi, is this description strictly closed to the hanbaliyya (and none a “wahhabi’s fiqh book”) ?
BarakAlLâhu fikum.
Wa-s-Salâm 3alaykum.

If the author of the book deviates from Hanbali methodology then it is not correct to described the author – nor his work – as being Hanbali. You cannot abandon well-established Hanbali legal methodology (e.g. using weak hadiths, legal analogy [qiyyas], scholarly consensus [ijma’], Companion reports, giving blind precedence to reports found in Bukhari and Muslim, heuristics for dealing with outwardly contradictory evidence or multiple interpretations) and still claim to represent the Hanbali tradition.
And Allah knows best.

Here’s something: Ibn Qudamah’s Wasiyyah.
Has anyone read this translation?
Asalaamu ‘Alaikum
That’s a good book but it doesn’t cover fiqh. There is a number of material that is available with regards to fiqh in Hanbali madhab - in the English language, and inshaAllah within the next 2 months I’ll mention some of the material available that may not yet have been covered. But for basic, there is Zaad al Mustaqani as well as it’s abridged form from later on (but I haven’t seen the inside of the abridgment which I will check out soon inshaAllah).
The majority of ulema in Saudi are Hanbai and there is also a legal journal available in English online (Al Adl) which has more modern case resolutions.
“If the author of the book deviates from Hanbali methodology then it is not correct to described the author – nor his work – as being Hanbali.”
If I’m not incorrect, doesn’t Sheikh ul Islaam Ibn Taymiyah (rah) argue to the effect of fiqh early on in the method now established by the Malikis in a book translated by Sidi Aisha Bewley? I haven’t yet read it, but than how would you describe this particular title? Does he become Maliki for that particular reading, and his book along with him?
Further, in his statement on masah ‘ala jawrabayn, he allowed it on socks with holes (taking into account being fair to the poor). Wouldn’t this be outside the methodology of our madhab, yet nobody in their right mind could say he’s outside of the madhab, or that the book in which he spoke concerning the matter to be outside of the madhab. I’m sure this is applicable to other ulema as well, he’s merely the most famous and infamous of the Hanbali ulema so I have easier access to and read his works more recently than some other ulema - so I mentioned him.
As for this book by Sheikh Salih al Fowzan, than it should be looked at - and even if the sheikh were to go away from the methodology in his commentary, it still serves as a good primer since it gives a companion text for Western students to Zaad al Mustaqani.

List of Hanbali works available in English translation:
- Provisions for the Hereafter (Zaad ul Maad) (4 vol) - Imaam Ibn al-Qayyim
- Abridged Provisions for the Hereafter (Mukhtasar Zaad ul Maad) (1 vol) - Sheikh ibn Abdul Wahhab
- Summary of Islamic Jurispudence (from Ar-Rawd Al-Murbi fi Sharh Zaad al Mustaqani of Sheikh Al Bahuti) (2 vol) - Sheikh Salih al Fawzan
- Fatwas of Muslim Women (Fatawa an-Nisa’) (1 vol) - Sheikhul Islaam Ibn Taymiyah
- Fiqh Made Easy (Tayseer al Fiqh) (1 vol) - Sheikh Saalih As-Sadlaan
- Ahmad Ibn Hanbal’s Treatise On Prayer
These are texts from the Hanbali ulema which I can vouch for (as I have only listed those one’s which I was able to add to my own collection) – but you scholars should be consulted when any layman decides to study a text, especially if you look into the background of the above books which are in no way considered primary texts for the madhab itself. The exception to the rule may be the book by Sheikh Salih al Fawzan, but even than, that isn’t a translation of the Zaad al Mustaqani and the sheikh’s book is more of an abridgment (with his opinions). It would be better to read it with the ‘Arabic (there were some lessons here from Zaad al Mustaqani awhile back also).
The second text should be read in conjunction with the first, and the footnotes are useful but the footnotes often apply arjah to positions taken by Sheikh al Albani, and he was not on our madhab. The third one can be read (for a while) in conjunction with the lessons available here, but in any case should be read along with the actual ‘Arabic so you can properly understand the positions according to our madhab and so there will be no confusion where As-sheikh differs. The fourth is just a set of fatwas, it’s not fiqh per-say. The last one is very easy and very contemporary, but there is no discussion of proofs. The sixth is not a work of fiqh but I included it since it was included by Sidi Musa Furber in one of his replies.
There are shorter treatises which you may be able to find online for free as well:
- A Study on Ablution, Bathing, Dry Ablution (Tayammum) and Prayer - Sheikh Salih ibn Uthaymeen
- Prostration due to Forgetfulness in the Prayer (Sujood as-Sahw) - Sheikh Salih ibn Uthaymeen
And several others from him (rah) online (I see a list here with 61 of his works and on his own website he even has translations of two works into Urdu).
There are also other English Hanbali works that I can’t seem to get my hands on which Sidi Musa Furber mentioned:
- Sheikh `Abd Al-Qadir Al-Jaylani’s Al-Ghunyah Li Talibi Taqir Al-Haqq
- Mukhtasar of al-Khiraqi Anas Khalid, 1992, New York University Order Number 9306777 [“call 1-800-521-0600 UMI Dissertation Service to get it “]
- Crime and Punishment under Islamic Law (section on Hudud of Manar al-sabil) trans by George Baroody
I’ve heard that the first may also be available in an Urdu or Hindi translation!!! The second is an important work in the madhab but it’ll cost you.
*Also I made a slip in my previous post, I meant (in the beginning paragraph) Zaad ul Maad and it’s mukhtasar. Zaad ul Mustaqani, in the form of a translation (and not a summary) is not yet available for Western audiences*
